The exam will start on 23rd June 2018, both for Secondary and Official School English teachers.

Exam Contents for Secundaria & Official Schools of Languages

Like everywhere else, the exam consists of 2 parts.  You need to pass the first in order to be a candidate for the second.

Part 1

This part consists of two:

Part 1.A. Secundarias

  • Listening:

An (approximately) 5′ audio will be played twice. Candidates need to summarise the information they hear and answer the questions provided in around 35 minutes. This is very much what we are doing in all the Poppies Courses, Foundation and Building Blocks.

  • Text Analysis

From a current, not necessarily literary, text in prose, the candidates will analyse the text bearing in mind:

  • Text type & Genre
  • (Main & Secondary) Communicative functions.
  • Stylistic resources
  • Answers to questions proposed by the Panel.

This part lasts 75 minutes.

  • Translations

2 translations without a dictionary, one from Spanish into English, the other from English into Spanish, from current literary or journalistic texts.

They don’t set the time, but they do say that the total length of Part 1.A is 3 hours. Therefore, we can assume that it will be, as before, one hour for both translations.

.

Part 1.A. Official Schools of Languages

  • Listening:

A 5-6′ audio will be played twice. Candidates need to summarise the information in about 200 words or write a 250-word composition on some aspect related to the contents. They will also need to answer questions on general information and/or specific details. The whole part should last 50 minutes.

  • Text Analysis

From a current, literary or journalistic text in prose, the candidates need to show their knowledge of the text and their mastery of the language, particularly concerning:

  • Understanding of text contents and type.
  • Language use (paraphrasing, lexis, synonyms, antonyms, etc.)
  • Pragmatic, semantic, syntactic, morphosyntactic and stylistic questions related to the text.

The above may be related to their implementation in the classroom.

This part lasts 80 minutes maximum.

  • Translations

2 translations, without a dictionary, from English into Spanish and from Spanish into English, of two literary or journalistic texts (of around 200 words each).

This part lasts 50 minutes maximum.

You can practise all the above with Our books  “Volumen Práctico” and “Analysis de Textos”. Also with the materials for language practice, we cover at the various Poppies Courses. You may also find our post text analysis of help.

The time assigned for Part 1A in the call Oposiciones Profesores Madrid 2018 is a maximum of 3 hours in total.

  • This part represents 70% of the total mark for Part 1.

Part 1. B. Essay

Both for Secundarias & Schools of Languages. This year 2018, you will have to write one essay on one of the 5 topics which will come out in the draw from the total list of topics. You have two hours to do it. Remember to follow the advice given to you here and in our mini-course. This part represents 30% of the total mark of the first part.

To pass to the second part you need to get at least 2.5 marks in each part (Part 1.A & Part 1.B). The panels will assess this Part 1.

Part 2

All the requirements your syllabus design needs to meet, together with the elements you need to include in your oral presentation are described in the Official Gazette of the Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid.  You will hand in your Syllabus Design once you have successfully passed the First Part.

Syllabus Design

The Syllabus Design needs to have a maximum of 80 pages, including annexes and any other support materials. The font is Arial, 12 and double space. It should also include a front page with all the candidate’s details and the subject.  Check all the details in the Official Gazzete.

Oral Presentation

The oral presentation should be distributed as follows:

  • 20 minutes for the syllabus design. You can use a one-page outline.
  • 30 minutes for the didactic unit.
  • 10 minutes for the debate.
  • The marks will be 30% for the Syllabus and 70% for the unit.

Our book Inglés Programación Didáctica will help you with this part 2.
