A great opportunity for English teachers to

  1. Connect your classroom to the world.
  2. Get your students to collaborate with other schools in English.
  3. Design or take part in projects which will be enriching not only in terms of using the language but also in terms of personal development.

Global Collaboration Day is held every year

The first time I heard about Global Collaboration Day was via e-mail

Back in 2014 

And it was about one of the projects. I published it on the old blog for teachers. But since I am moving or have moved all the relevant posts to the Poppies’ blog I’ll tell you about it in a following post. I believe it can be carried out in collaboration with other schools and with other teachers at any time. That is why, inspired on it I will be proposing a project around it.

Then in 2015

I did not have time to publish the information well in advance because I was busy with the second edition of the Poppies Foundation Course. So I copied the e-mail the organisers had sent me. They were explaining the idea and here is the link to that year’s post

And again in 2016

Last year’s post announcing Global Collaboration Day  was also limited to copying the e-mail sent to me by the organisers. It had all the information you needed to join the projects.

Why do I think  Global Collaboration Day and projects are a great idea?

There are many reasons. Among them:

  1. Projects like this foster Collaboration among different students, different teachers, different locations, different countries even.
  2. It’s a great opportunity for students to use the language in real communicative situations: with other students and other teachers.
  3. Students can learn, using the English language, about different realities in other parts of the world.
  4. At the same time, they are given problems to solve and so they are learning by doing.

Las 3 C: Conectivismo, Colaboración, Comunicación =Aprendizaje usando las nuevas tecnologías

poppies-3-2El  Conectivismo de Siemens  es uno de los enfoques metodológicos sobre  el aprendizaje en el siglo XXI y que tratamos en el Foundation Course Sin duda, aprender es hoy no sólo posible sino más accesible porque las nuevas tecnologías nos permiten, además de conectarnos, aprender a aprender. También a colaborar.

Colaboración y Nuevas tecnologías

Sé que, para muchos, la colaboración y la preparación de las oposiciones, o el trabajar en el mismo campo o en el mismo centro es, prácticamente, un oximoron. Voy a demostraros que, por el contrario, enriquece.

La colaboración enriquece

Conocí a Meritxell Viñas de TotemGuard Academy como tutora cuando yo realicé el Curso de Competencias Digitales  en octubre 2015. Y algunas de las herramientas que utilizo en los cursos de Poppies las aprendí con ella.

Aprender a aprender usando las nuevas tecnologías

Así es como Meritxell describe el curso de Competencias Digitales y yo, suscribo lo que dice:

Igualmente me encanta cuando los profesores me hacen saber de la mejora notable en la calidad de su trabajo o en sus condiciones laborales.

Mi talento es explicar cosas complejas en términos fácilmente entendibles por todos. Por eso desde principiantes a profesores con cierto nivel acuden a nosotros para formarse.

¿Qué gano yo con recomendar el curso?

Como he dicho arriba, la colaboración enriquece.

Lo que yo gano es poner mi grano de arena para contribuir a mejorar la educación y la enseñanza del inglés en España.

Que otros profesores, especialmente aquellos que están en contacto directo con los adolescentes,  tengan confianza en manejar y sepan explotar las nuevas tecnologías para motivar, llegar y atender las necesidades de todos y cada uno de sus alumnos.

Yo no pude terminar el curso por cuestiones personales. Pero en el mes y pico que estuve haciendolo aprendí cosas muy interesantes. sobre el uso de distintas herramientas en las nuevas tecnologías, que he puesto en práctica en los cursos de Poppies.

Si yo en mes y medio aprendí un montón de cosas ¿qué no puedes aprender tú, profesor de inglés con plaza?

También tú, profesor de inglés interino o no, que está preparando la oposición. Aunque entiendo que, en este último caso, hay menos tiempo y las prioridades, tal vez, sean otras.

17th September is Global Collaboration Day

Although I meant to write about this at the very beginning of September, the organisation and launching of the Poppies’ Foundation Course  prevented me from talking about it earlier. So…it’s probably too late but I think it’s a great idea which is worth spreading.

What is Global Collaboration day?

In a nutshell this is how the organisers describe it:

Global Collaboration Day is a full day of globally connecting activities for students, teachers, classrooms, schools and organizations to demonstrate global collaboration and bring awareness of the value of global education.

So here goes the e-mail I have just received:

It’s now Thursday, September 17th, in the South Pacific–and that means Global Collaboration Day has arrived!

Over the next couple of days, students, classrooms, teachers, administrators, parents and organizations will be either attending and/or hosting events online that are designed to showcase and promote global collaboration. We (Lucy Gray + Steve Hargadon, co-chairs of the Global Education Conference) are the calendar coordinators but not the direct conveners: that is, over 100 groups have designed and planned their own events which we have then organized into a directory and in special calendars to allow these events to be seen in any time zone in the world.

This is a huge worldwide experiment to demonstrate the power of globally-connected learning.

Examples of projects and events include: a teacher in Australia who will lead others in learning to dance Greek-style via Skype and Edmodo; African students and teachers answering questions through Whatsapp; and classrooms participating in a global virtual amazing race. There are professional development sessions for individual pre-service teachers, in-service educators, and other adults; as well as projects for entire classrooms to join in. We encourage you to browse the event directory or the calendar and choose a compelling event to attend!

Here are some tips to keep in mind as the next couple of days unfold:

  • Read directions and our website carefully to prepare.
  • If you have a question about a particular event or project, contact the host of that event directly. Their contact information is posted in each event listing.
  • Join our Remind texting and email group for event reminders.
  • If you need live help, we’ll do our best to be available. We will be in and out of this Blackboard Collaborate room as our own schedules allow.
  • Be patient! Things may not always go as well as intended! Learning to be flexible and adapting to situations online is a big part of becoming a global collaborator.
